Maine’s Planned Parenthood and supporters are fighting back against defunding plans

WGME – January 6, 2017
WASHINGTON D.C. (WGME) — House Republicans are making plans to strip Planned Parenthood of Federal Funding.

Speaker Paul Ryan announced yesterday a defunding measure would appear in legislation to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

Planned Parenthood and its’ supporters in Maine are fighting back.

Officials from Planned Parenthood of Northern New England say they are outraged by Speaker Paul Ryan’s announcement.

Maine Representative Chellie Pingree stood with lawmakers and Planned Parenthood executives on Capitol Hill.

The group is vowing to fight back against Republicans in order to preserve health care for hundreds of thousands of women.

The vice president of public policy for Planned Parenthood of Northern New England today said 10,000 Mainers use Planned Parenthood and if federal funding were cut, they would lose about 25 percent of the organization’s $4 million budget for Maine.

“The reality is that we for many of our patients are their only access to health care. We provide them essential preventative critical care like lifesaving cancer screenings, diseases testing and treatment, access to birth control, wellness exams. Without us they don’t have access to care. For many people, for thousands in Maine, this is devastating news,” says Nicole Clegg, Planned Parenthood of New England.
