Bills Scored

LD83: would have repealed Maine’s successful adult involvement law and instead require physicians to obtain signed consent from a young person’s parent before she can obtain an abortion. The government mandate would create a “one-size-fits-all” approach to a family relationships. While we all hope every young woman will make the decision to end a pregnancy with the support of her family, the reality is that there are times when that is not a safe option. One study found that one third of young women who do not notify their parents about an abortion have experience family violence and fear it will recur. DEFEATED in HOUSE and SENATE

LD 1312, also known as a TRAP – Targeted Regulations of Abortion Providers – bill would have created special regulations for Planned Parenthood of Northern New England outside of medical standards. Similar bills in Texas, Alabama and Mississippi led to closures of abortion providers. DEFEATED in HOUSE and SENATE

LD 319 provides critical access to reproductive and sexual health care including lifesaving cancer screenings, birth control, STI testing and treatment for low-income adults. The bill will improve the health of thousands of Mainers and help the state save taxpayer dollars through the reduction of unintended pregnancy. PASSED AND ENACTED

LD 633 would have provided coverage through MaineCare for low-income adults up to 138% of the federal poverty level. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) set aside federal dollars for Maine to provide Medicaid coverage to approximately 69,500 people who would be uninsured otherwise. Maine is the only state in New England that hasn’t accepted the federal funding available under the ACA to extend coverage to its low-income uninsured. FAILED final passage in SENATE.
